Review of Wool: Silo Book One

Author: Hugh Howey
Personal Rating: 15+ (for heavy cursing and moderate violence)

What It's About

Wool is an amazing Sci-Fi book about a post-apocalyptic world. The last inhabitants of Earth live underground in a huge bunker called the silo. The silo has hundreds of floors, with a staircase spiraling downward into infinity. The inhabitants' only view of above-ground is through a camera that projects onto all of the screens in the Silo, which displays the ruin and bleakness of the surface. The bodies of dead cleaners, people who are sent to wipe the lens of the camera as a punishment for treason, are visible, along with a dead tree and a barrier of dirt surrounding the camera. A simple rule of life for the people of the silo is that those who are sent out to clean do not live. They simply fall dead to the hard ground after a few minutes. That is all they had ever seen. That is, until a woman named Allison goes out after meeting with an illeged hacker mere days before her leave.

Allison's husband, the sheriff, frantically tries to uncover what she saw and why she went outside, but fails to do so. After he leaves the silo in an attempt to be with his wife one last time, it's up to Juliette Nichols to finally find out who made the silo, why, and what is outside that made the sheriff and his wife leave to die. Juliette was to be made sheriff as Alisson's husband's dying wish, and she makes sure to live up to his legacy he left.

What I Liked

This book is one of my all-time favorites. The dystopian, post-apocalptic narrative is so enthralling and exciting! Once I started the book, I couldn't put it down! It is such a perfect addition the Sci-Fi genre, and makes you want to hear the rest of Juiliettes story even after the series ends! The idea of an underground silo is strangely genious, as is the idea that they are stuck, with absolutely no way out. Though claustrophobic at times, Wool is one of the best, and simply magnificent books you could read!

What I Disliked

I only really disliked how the book was too far off from the T.V. show (streaming on Apple T.V.) which really, really bugged me! I feel like the book went so fast, and she show went sooooo slow. The last episode of the first season happens about halfway through the book!

Conclusion

Wool is one of the most dynamic, claustrophobic books I've ever read! With characters you'll root for till the end of time, Wool is an absolute mind bender!
