Review of Let the Storm Break

Author: Shannon Messenger
Personal Rating: 14+

What It's About

Let the Storm Break is the second book in the Sky Fall series, which consists of three books in total. This book is focused on Vane and Audra as they start to feel more and more uneasy and disconnected each passing day. Audra left to go on her own mission, leaving Vane to fend for himself as he struggles to gain and keep the support of the sylphs as king. He is also constantly trailed by bodygaurds to keep him safe from Raiden's merciless attacks, though they cannot protect him from the haunting dreams he is sent by the enemy.

In Let the Sky Fall, Audra had the Westerly breakthrough, letting her sense and control all Westerly winds. The only downside, though, is that she, along with Vane, hold the secret language Raiden wants desperately enough to kill for. As she runs from Vane and her past, she is captured by a devilish man, and is not certain if she will ever escape.

What I Liked

I really liked the suspenseful intrigue of Audra being captured by the mystery man. She tries to evade him, but she simply isn't strong enough to fend him off before he takes her. This was especially strange becuase his strength matches that of a Gale, though his intentions do not.

I also liked the tension betweeen Audra and Vane, considering Audra thinks she's not good enough for Vane, while Vane thinks that the spark that flared between them flickered out. And when Audra runs away from Vane, he thinks that is the end of their hard-fought relationship. The magic is also just as exciting as it was in the first book, and more uses for it are unveiled.

What I Disliked

There are only two things that I disliked about the book; the character Os, and the character Solana. Os seems like he should belong in a book about a mental hospital escapee, because he constantly raves about the "power of pain", or the process of ripping away living creatures will and personality. Solana just seems like a prissy princess that pines for Vane all too often, though she always denies it. Solana was betrothed to Vane before he knew he was a sylph, which makes it extremely awkward.

Conclusion

Let the Storm Break is a great continuation of Let the Sky Fall, starting with lots of suspense and jealous drama, which leads to an epic ending with lots of magic usage and action.

Content Warning:

There are a few makeout scenes in the book, along with mild innuendos scattered through it as well.
